Despite its rugged appearance, not all of the Kodiaq models are 4-wheel drive - for the purposes of cost, weight, CO2 emissions and fuel economy many are front wheel drive only. The 4x4 version will cost you approximately £1,500 more than the two-wheel drive model, and can be specified either as a manual or automatic, and in any of the different engines barring the least powerful 1.5 TSI model. As the 4x4 system adds a fair bit of extra weight and increased drive train friction, fuel economy drops by around 10% and CO2 levels are higher, which could be an issue for company car drivers. The system sends all of the power for the front wheels as standard then as they start to slip it starts to divert more power to the rear wheels for extra traction. If you're looking for a 4WD model for extra reassurance in snow and ice we'd always also recommend fitting winter tyres when the weather turns as they can make a huge difference, and in the majority of the time giving a better performance in the snow on a front wheel drive car than a 4 wheel drive on the typical UK summer tyres that manufacturers supply on new cars here, as whilst the extra traction of the 4 wheel drive may get you off the line, it won’t help you brake or turn any better, so you'll just as likely slide off the road, where winter tyres will actually increase grip to allow cornering and stopping.
