Fuel & Gearbox
The Octavia is predominantly a front wheel drive car, but Skoda offers an optional 4 wheel drive model for around £1,500 more on the largest 2.0 litre diesel engines in either the SE L or Laurin & Klement spec, in the 4WD drive only Scout model or even in the performance vRS spec. A Haldex clutch sends all of the power to the front wheels until they start to slip, then power is sent to the rear wheels. This allows it to tackle muddy farm tracks and steep inclines easily. Fuel economy is blunted by around 8-10 mpg due to the extra weight of the system and the extra friction in the drivetrain, but for those that need it, the car can be a godsend. We'd always suggest fitting winter tyres to your new car (4x4 or not) if you're experiencing wintry conditions, as the four wheel drive system can only help get traction off the line, it can't give you more cornering grip on snow or help you stop any quicker, and a front wheel drive car on winter tyres can sometimes handle the snow better than a 4WD car fitted with summer tyres.
