With a reputation as one of the world’s leading hybrid manufacturers, it comes as no surprise to find that the new Toyota Yaris range comes with hybrid options in both the Excel and Icon models. The combines an efficient and environmentally advanced electric engine with a powerful 1.5 Litre VVT-i petrol combustion engine, and can deliver up to 98 hp. Using a lighter battery than the previous iteration has allowed Toyota to reduce the weight of the Yaris and increase the maximum speed to around 104 mph. One of the additional benefits of owning the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid – on top of the low fuel consumption and stylish exterior – is that the hybrid version is exempt from the congestion charge in London since it emits only 75g/km of CO2. This means it will have added appeal for drivers who spend a lot of time in the capital, either commuting or simply exploring the urban environment in comfort. With a push-button start, this car is as simple to drive as you could wish for.
At present, the hybrid engine is not available for the Yaris Active or Sport models, and with prices starting at just over £16,100 for the Icon version, and around £17,700 for the Excel model, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid is more expensive than the standard non-electric version. The hybrid does, however, offer longer term fuel savings, as you might expect, and is bound to attract interest from environmentally minded motorists.
The 2021 Yaris Hybrid uses the same technology as the incredibly popular Prius model, so it has had years to be perfected, and is based around a 1.5 litre petrol engine an electric motor and battery pack, which gives you nearly 80 mpg on the official combined cycle, and CO2 numbers low enough to avoid paying the congestion charge.
