Despite the rugged off-road looks, not all of the XC40 models are 4 wheel drive as standard. Some of the less powerful D3 and T3 models can be specified with front wheel drive which is cheaper, and due to the weight of the 4x4 system means that they are slightly better on fuel economy. However if you want your XC40 to perform best in the inclement weather then the AWD system is the way to go. the 4x4 drivetrain will cost you around £1,500 if chosen on the D3 model either as a manual or auto, but is fitted as standard to the D4, T4 and T5 petrols, all of which also have the geartronic automatic box as standard fit too. We'd always recommend winter tyres for the older months anyway, as the summer tyres fitted as standard won't handle turning or braking well in the snow, even if the car is fitted with all wheel drive as standard.
