The Lexus NX takes an unconventional route in providing 4-wheel drive compared to most SUV's. The standard version of the 300h is 2-wheel drive and both the petrol engine and electric motor send power to the front wheels only. If you select the more expensive model, this adds a second electric motor attached to the rear wheels for 4x4 and instead of the power just being sent to the front, the petrol engine still sends power to the front but the electrical power can be split front to rear depending on how slippy the conditions are, which will get you going. However, because the hybrid is self-charging and only uses a small battery, the 4 wheel drive doesn't have any more power overall - its still rated at 197 horsepower despite having an extra electric motor as the battery energy is split between them rather than powering both at full power at the same time. It's also worth noting that whilst 4 wheel drive might get you off the line, having a set of winter tyres fitted to a front wheel drive car can actually give it better performance in the snow than a 4 wheel drive car, as the summer tyres we get as standard in the UK will not help you turn or brake in the snow, so you will as easily slide off the road despite your 4WD system if they are not fitted.
