With the recent crackdown on diesel and increasingly stringent rules on entering city centres, along with tighter company car tax rules, the popularity of hybrids has soared. to capitalise on this, Mercedes-Benz offers several hybrid options in the new 2020 E-Class range: the E300e and E300de. Let’s start with the E300e, it's a petrol-electric plug in hybrid, with a combination of a 2.0 turbocharged litre petrol engine that has 211 horsepower when running by itself, and a 121 horsepower electric motor built into the gearbox which can either be used to supplement the petrol engine, or run on electric power alone at lower speeds. This will give you al electric only range of around 30 miles, so if your morning commute is 15 miles each way in slow moving traffic then this is perfect for you, then when you need longer journeys the engine kicks in for faster speeds or if you're accelerating hard.
Secondly we have the E300de which is a very similar proposition - the same electric motor set up but this time with a 2.0 litre diesel engine, so if you do a fair amount of motorway work as well as commuting then opt for the diesel, it'll save you more money. Both of these cars only really make sense if you have the facility to charge at home overnight to get those 30 miles of almost free motoring every day, but if you have that then despite the extra initial expense you could save a lot of money, particularly if you need to go into congestion zones like London.
