It's incredibly rare that a single car manufacturer manages to produce the best car in the category it competes in, but somehow Porsche manages it every time, and in doing so it tends to redefine what's possible. Combine this with fantastic looks, beautifully built no-nonsense interiors and some of the best resale values on any car in the UK, and you can see why the brand is so coveted. Let's start with the smallest in the range - the Boxster was launched to give a more pure sports rival to the likes of the BMW Z3 and Mercedes SLK when launched (which have progressed to be the Z4 and the SLC now...) and in doing so it created the defining car in the segment, if you're looking for a small open top 2 seat sport car then the Boxster is the benchmark that all car journalists compare everything else to.
The Cayman was created as a hard top Boxster as Porsche saw a gap in the market where adding both practicality and rigidity in the form of a metal roof would make for an even better sports car priced beneath the 911, and again it is now the defining model with few rivals capable of coming close to its handling prowess. Originally it was priced at several thousand more than the Boxster, but a realignment with the new 718 generation model has seen it now priced several thousand cheaper, making it a true sports car bargain.
The Cayenne pulled off a trick that almost none though possible, and were worried would damage the reputation of brand - a sports car manufacturer selling a 4x4 looked like profiteering and diluting the heritage, but when the car came out and feels like something that weighs half as much and can be thrown at corners with abandon, so much better than anything else in the category that cars like the Range Rover Sport and the Mercedes GLE feel like big wobbly barges compared to the Cayenne. The looks of the early generation models were definitely what you would call "challenging" but it has become better looking with every new model and is now a head turner, and with the turbo model is staggeringly fast.
The Macan is simply the best handling 4x4 money can buy, and also the best looking - it shrinks around you to the point you feel like you're driving a well sorted hot hatchback, with crisp and instant responses from the steering, yet is comfortable and practical enough for all the family - it does pretty much everything amazingly well and is one of the best cars to live with every day.
The Panamera pushed Porsche into the luxury saloon market, and took everything up a notch, where the big saloons from Audi, BMW and Mercedes feel big and solid but very mass-market, the Panamera feels a cut above, feeling a true luxury product yet still very formal and business-like rather than opulent, but still far more capable than rivals in the corners, something you can do a 200 mile high speed business trip in with your clients, but then still have fun pushing the limits at the weekend.
The new Taycan has simply shattered what people thought of what was possible with an electric car - bringing brain warping performance and ridiculous off the line acceleration, but combining it with stunning handling making something that weighs 2.3 tonnes and seats 5 in comfort, allowing you to throw it about like something half the size, along with next generation styling and a fantastic interior - it's the best electric car on sale by a mile.
Finally we come to the 911 - do we even need to describe it? It is THE sports car - Iconic.
