Nissan offers the X-Trail in both a fuel saving and wallet friendly 2 wheel drive and a more adventurous and rough-terrain handling 4 wheel drive version. The 4x4 gubbins underneath the car do add a bit of weight (around 100kg) but don't blunt performance noticeably and add only a couple of MPG onto the official economy figures, but if you are going to take your new X-Trail up a muddy farm track or across a field, or even just need it to tackle the snow then the 4 wheel drive version is the one to go for. It'll set you back around £1500 more than the equivalent two wheel drive variant and can only be specified on the diesel engines currently though that may change. We'd still always recommend a good set of winter tyres if you're struggling with the snow, as although 4 wheel drive will get you traction off the line, it can't make you turn or stop any better.
