Despite it's rugged appearance, not all of the Kodiaq models are 4 wheel drive - for the purposes of cost, weight, CO2 emissions and fuel economy many are front wheel drive only. The 4x4 version will cost you approximately £1,500 more than the two wheel drive model, and can be specified either as a manual or automatic, and in any of the different engines barring the least powerful 1.4 TSI 125 bhp model. As the 4x4 system adds a fair bit of extra weight and increased drive train friction, fuel economy drops by around 10% and CO2 levels are higher, which could be an issue for company car drivers. The system sends all of the power for the front wheels as standard then as they start to slip it starts to divert more power to the rear wheels for extra traction. If you're looking for a 4WD model for extra reassurance in snow and ice we'd always recommend winter tyres as they can make a huge difference.
