The all new 2020 Toyota C-HR has ditched the 1.2T petrol engine it had as an entry level non-hybrid model as Toyota looks to reduce its overall CO2 fleet levels and make the planet greener with more hybrids. That means the 1.8 Hybrid petrol unit is now the starting point in the line-up. Taken from the Prius, the powerplant is a well proven successful design combining a 1.8 litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with an electric motor to boost the engine at lower revs to give a combined output of 122bhp, a o-60 time of 11 seconds and a top speed of 106 mph. It has a heavy focus on efficiency rather than outright power, but thanks to the electric motor the initial shove off the line is noticeable, and on official figures should manage around 50 mpg. If you haven't used a Toyota hybrid before or a CVT automatic transmission, it may at first come as a surprise to hear the engine revs spin up higher than the car feels it's going as the CVT matches the engine speed with the road speed in a different way than a normal automatic, and it may also rev higher after you've removed your foot from the accelerator for a short time to help recharge the battery, but once you've got used to this disconnect between what your ears are telling you and the car speed it's easy to get used to and a pleasant relaxed drive. The C-HR 1.8 is available in all the different trim levels: Icon, Design, Excel and Dynamic.
