The new 2021 Volkswagen Golf mk8 is focusing on hybrid models much more than previous versions as the technology has developed, people are moving away from diesel, the EU pushes for lower CO2 levels and city centres create low emission zones. While there are "mild hybrid" models with the eTSI versions which add a 48V starter motor to give a slight boost, the proper plug in hybrid model in the range is the GTE. Following from previous GTE versions in the Mk7.5 which sold so strongly VW had to temporarily suspend taking orders as the production lines couldn't keep up, the new mk8 improves the tech still further. It's still based around the 1.4 TSI petrol engine which on it's own produces 150bhp, but this time it's combined with a new more powerful 85kW electric motor and a new larger 13kWh battery, meaning an electric only range of about 40 miles, and speeds of over 80 mph just using the electric motor. When you ask for maximum acceleration and both motors are used in tandem then the combined power is 245 bhp, the same as the new Golf GTI. So if you like GTI levels of performance but do mainly short commutes daily in slow traffic and do occasional longer motorway journeys, and have the facility to recharge at home overnight (and remember to do it!) then the new Golf GTE could be the perfect combination of hot hatch and save you a fortune in fuel at the same time, plus with the strong resale values the monthly leasing prices are typically very affordable. If you're doing mainly longer motorway journeys every day at higher speeds then you may find the GTD option more economical.
