With the new Golf Mk8 model being released and the ever increasing pressure from Europe for manufacturers to make more fuel efficient cars and lower CO" levels, we are seeing in increase in the number of VW Golf Hybrid models being released. There are 2 types: the plug-in hybrid which has a larger battery, will run on electric power alone for a significant distance and can be recharged overnight, and the mild hybrid which only has a small battery, recharges purely from the engine and regenerative braking, and uses the battery power to help assist the engine at low speeds to get a slight efficiency boost. The Plug in hybrid is called the GTE model and combines the 1.4 TSI petrol engine with an electric motor to give a total of 241 horsepower when both are used in tandem for full bore acceleration, plus large 13kWh battery (50% more than the old GTE model) which should allow electric only running for 30-35 miles. The mild hybrid uses a 48V electrical system combined with either the 1.0 litre TSI petrol engine or the 1.5 TSI petrol engine and a small battery, it will boost the car when pulling away from junctions and roundabouts so excessive revs aren’t needed, and that small extra boost will improve fuel economy by 5-10%, these engines are called the eTSI.
