Volkswagen has several different 1.0 litre engine options in the new 2021 Polo model, starting with the non-turbo 3 cylinder unit that develops 65 or 75 horsepower. It's not quick by any stretch of the imagination - fine around town up to 40mph but you have to work the engine hard on motorways, so best saved as the budget option for learner drivers and those who only do short journeys. Then there's the 1.0 TSI models which have a choice of 95 or 115 bhp, both are basically the same engine, just the more powerful model has a higher output from the turbo. The 95 is most people's choice - it is smooth at lower speeds and yet propels the car along at a decent lick when pushed. The 115 model is only available in higher trim levels like the R-Line and SEL but does make the car genuinely nippy, but you pay a fair bit more for the privilege, and either can be specified with the manual or optional DSG automatic gearbox.
