Volvo has launched a new plug-in hybrid version of the fantastic XC40 model, based around its 1.5 litre petrol T3 engine paired with an electric motor that produces 81 horsepower to give a combined 258 bhp. This is all delivered through the front wheels only - it isn't 4-wheel drive to save further weight and make it more efficient. The battery can be plugged in overnight and has a capacity of 10.7kW, giving the car an electric only range of around 28 miles, more than enough for most commutes. It can be driven in one of 3 drive modes: hybrid, which will be the most efficient and bring in the electric motor as much as possible, Pure will maximise both, and Power which will be the petrol engine only. So if you do a fair bit of commuting sat in traffic through city centres, and the occasional long journey and have somewhere to plug it in at home (and will remember to do it every night!) then this could save you significant amounts of money on fuel. If you're looking for a purely electric version of the XC40 then check out the Recharge model which runs purely on batteries.
